At the recently held Meeting of the Serbian Chemical Society, Slađana Savić, a member of the ELIPS team, presented the results of our project. The conference was held on June 8 and 9, 2024 at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Niš and included a series of plenary, oral, and poster presentations in the field of chemistry.

One of the areas from which it is presented every year is the teaching of chemistry. At the conference, the third conference contribution entitled ” How 7th-grade students in Serbia identify and analyze environmental issues?” prepared by Slađana Savić, Vera Županec, Dragana Đorđević and Milica Marušić Jablanović was presented.

The paper presents the results of the cognitive skills of seventh grade students in Serbia (26 out of 60 points in total) obtained in the first part of the research on environmental literacy. In order to improve the skills of recognizing and analyzing environmental problems, the authors proposed an activity they called “The Case of the Muddy Nišava River*”.

In this activity, students conduct an experiment and measure the clarity of a water sample, and then discuss the causes of the unexpected turbidity of the river from the positions of chemists, biologists and geographers.

In this way, with a simple experiment, a complex problem can be seen from several sides, which develops critical thinking among students.

* Nišava River was chosen because of the location of the conference.
